Forest Adventure Hike and River Cave

1. Away from it all – this experience is away from the frequently visited tourist sites. Our adventure takes place in the heart of the mountainous city of Utuado.

2. Hike the Tanama River forest on a guided tour through previously traveled indigenous “Taino” terrain with evidence of their tracks.

3.Visit either a water river cave or a land cave, both totally secluded, non-touristy, and quite unexplored. Experience rafting or floating through the river cave (weather-permitting).

4. Land experts – our trained guides are also mostly local organic farmers who know the land well. They won’t just name any plant or specimen or creature on the walk but they’ll also tell travelers the many uses of them in the wild. For example, they may demonstrate the sting of the itchy “pica-pica” leaf and teach us about bats among other things.

5. Commitment to safety – our local tour company and guides put our travelers’ safety and the environment at the top of everything they do. Hikers must wear helmets and come ready to experience mother nature by following specific safety protocols.

6. Proximity to Caguana’s Indigenous Ceremonial Park – our hike is within five minutes from one of the most preserved indigenous parks in the Caribbean.

The Experience – During the hike, we’ll go through rocky paths and rugged terrain, but not without plenty of breaks and cultural teaching moments. Depending on the weather and on the rainy season, the hike will take us either through an underground river cave or through a narrow, secluded, virgin cave, both with their share of non-touristy friendly bats. We’ll use special helmets to protect us during the hike and the cave tour.

As the day evolves, we’ll cross a small “Indiana Jones-type” hanging bridge and hike a bit more. If time permits it, we’ll also get to learn a bit about organic farming.

This adventure day is usually the highlight of many of our travelers. Rain or shine, dry or muddy terrain, our travelers will hike. It’s all part of the experience of spending one day immersed with mother nature.
