El Yunque Rainforest

THE RAINFOREST

  • El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. This rainforest is a sacred place for Puerto Ricans and the former Taínos. Many believe its name comes from the Taíno word Yuke, or “white earth,” a reference to the clouds that gather around the forest’s mountainous peak; others believe it derives from Yúcahu, the Taíno deity of fertility. During hurricanes, many believe wind forces severely damage El Yunque as it takes a sacrificial beating for the wellbeing of the island. In the process, oftentimes it changes the course of the storm and sends it away.
  • At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse. Come experience the breathtaking scenery, clear mountain rivers, and outdoor recreation opportunities year round.
  • There are three main ways in which our travelers may experience this beautiful natural wonder.
  1. Our signature “non-touristy” Naguabo Rainforest Adventure – Travel to the south of the rainforest and meet local guides at a private rainforest farm. Once at base camp, after a safety briefing and safety gear, travelers take a guided, educational hike up a mountain with professional wilderness-trained guides. After 15 minutes of a simple hike, an uphill hike starts for about 20 minutes (with plenty of scenic water breaks). Once up top, travelers will enjoy sliding down a beautiful natural waterslide. Our second stop will take us to a pristine natural rainforest pool. With the help of expert guides, travelers will try to swim behind a waterfall. Our final stop will be another forest pool where travelers can relax, take pictures, and enjoy paradise.
  2. El Yunque Rainforest Standard Visit – Enjoy a state of the art Visitor Center where you’ll learn about El Yunque’s history, flora, and fauna. Find out more about the 240 plant species endemic to Puerto Rico. Enjoy the park’s pure air and great birdwatching. Walk the accessible interpretive trail that circles the property, along with opportunities to spot the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot. This visit may include one or two 10-20 minute simple hikes.
  3. Zipline at El Yunque – Join others who prefer to experience El Yunque by flying through the air on canopy tours.
  4. Dual Zipline and Rainforest Visit – Partake of our standard rainforest visit in the morning. After an authentic lunch, enjoy a zipline tour in the afternoon.
